Loneliness does not always look like being by yourself. Sometimes it looks like sitting at a full dinner table and feeling unseen. It can be the quiet apartment after a divorce, the empty side of the bed after a loss, or the new city where nobody knows your name. It can even hit on a busy Sunday, surrounded by people, when you wonder if anyone would notice if you were gone.
If that is you today, you are not weak and you are not forgotten. Even David, a king surrounded by people, prayed, "Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted" (Psalm 25:16, NIV). God put that prayer in the Bible so you would know you can bring your loneliness straight to Him.
"The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18, NIV)
The best news for a lonely heart is the name God gave His Son. "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us") (Matthew 1:23, NIV). Jesus did not love us from a distance. He came close.
He also knows loneliness from the inside. In the garden of Gethsemane He told His friends, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me" (Matthew 26:38, NIV), and they fell asleep. That is why the Bible can say, "We do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses" (Hebrews 4:15, NIV). When you feel alone, you are talking to Someone who understands.
And His promise does not run out. "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5, NIV). His last words in Matthew are, "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20, NIV).
In the New Walk message "Overcoming the Holiday Blues: Start Here" (watch it here), we talked about how a season meant for joy can turn into a season of stress, grief, and loneliness. The message challenges the lie that joy is something that can simply vanish, and points us to a joy that is internal, a fruit of the Spirit that no circumstance can touch. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace" (Galatians 5:22, NIV). With the holidays coming, that is a word for anyone who dreads an empty chair at the table.
As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 3, The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, declares that "the Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God." The Scriptures declare His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary work on the cross, His bodily resurrection from the dead, and His exaltation to the right hand of God. Our statement on the Godhead adds that because He is both God and man, He is "Immanuel," God with us.
That is not just doctrine. It means the eternal Son of God chose to come near to you. And He keeps bringing people near too, because "God sets the lonely in families" (Psalm 68:6, NIV).
1. Tell God the truth. Pray honestly, the way David did. Say, "Lord, I feel alone." "Come near to God and he will come near to you." (James 4:8, NIV) Set aside a few quiet minutes each morning this week to read one Psalm and talk with Him.
2. Reach out to one person. Loneliness tells you to wait until someone notices you. Instead, send one text, make one visit, or invite someone for coffee. Chances are they feel lonely too. "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn." (Romans 12:15, NIV)
3. Let God set you in a family. Find a place where people know your name and pray for you. Come to Sunday worship or Tuesday prayer, and tell someone at the welcome table, "I am new and I would love to connect." God uses His church to answer the prayer of the lonely.
Lord Jesus, You are Immanuel, God with us. Thank You that I am never truly alone, because You promised You would never leave me or forsake me. You see the empty places in my heart and the nights that feel long. Come close to me today. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and with a joy no circumstance can take away. Give me courage to reach out, and lead me to a church family where I belong. If I have never given my life to You, I do that now. I believe You died for my sins and rose again, and I receive You as my Savior and Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.
You do not have to walk into a new place alone. Someone will be glad to greet you and sit with you at New Walk Church, 3121 Park Avenue, South Plainfield NJ. Come as you are and bring a friend.
Watch the message "Overcoming the Holiday Blues: Start Here", and plan your visit here. We would love to meet you and pray with you.

1. Dile a Dios la verdad. Ora con sinceridad, como lo hizo David. Dile: "Señor, me siento solo."
Acércate a mí hoy.
