When the Bills Are Bigger Than the Paycheck

The rent is due. The car needs a repair you did not plan for. The credit card balance keeps climbing, and every time you check your bank account your stomach tightens. Maybe you lie awake doing math in your head, trying to figure out how to stretch what you have until the next payday.

If that is where you are today, you are not alone, and you are not a failure. Money stress is one of the heaviest burdens people carry, and it touches everything: your sleep, your marriage, your peace of mind. The good news is that God sees your need, and He has not left you to carry it by yourself.

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19, NIV)

Five Loaves, Two Fish, and One Question

In his message "3 Reasons You're Living in Lack (And How to Fix It)" (watch it here), Pastor Rob took us to John 6, where Jesus feeds more than five thousand people. A huge crowd was hungry, and Jesus turned to Philip and asked where they could buy bread for everyone. Then John tells us something surprising:

"He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do." (John 6:6, NIV)

Pastor Rob pointed out that every test God allows comes down to the same question, and it always has the same answer. The question is, Do you trust Me? The answer is always yes. He shared how, a while back, New Walk itself went through a season when the bills were bigger than the offerings month after month. Instead of panicking, the church chose to say yes to God and trust Him, and God carried us through.

Notice how each person in the story saw the problem. Philip ran the numbers and concluded it would take more than half a year's wages. Andrew found a boy with a small lunch but asked, "how far will they go among so many?" (John 6:9, NIV) Jesus took the same small lunch and did something different.

"Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish." (John 6:11, NIV)

He gave thanks for what was in His hands. Everyone ate until they were full, and the disciples gathered twelve baskets of leftovers (John 6:12 to 13). God did not just make it enough. He made it more than enough. Pastor Rob reminded us that the boy was the one who saw his little lunch as something worth giving, and in the hands of Jesus it became a miracle.

What We Believe

As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 2, The One True God, teaches that God has revealed Himself as the eternal "I AM," "the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind."

That matters when money is tight. The God who created everything is not short on resources. "The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." (Psalm 24:1, NIV) His blessing is not always measured in dollars, but He is a faithful Provider who cares about your needs, your family, and your future.

3 Practical Steps for This Week

1. Answer the test with a yes. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5 to 6, NIV) Write down the money need that worries you most. Then pray over it out loud: "Jesus, yes, I trust You with this." Do it again every morning this week.

2. Give thanks and take stock of what is in your hands. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV) Make a list of what you do have. Then sit down and write a simple budget: what comes in, what goes out, and every debt you owe. "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." (Proverbs 21:5, NIV) Pick one small debt and focus extra payments there until it is gone.

3. Do not carry it alone. "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2, NIV) Shame keeps money problems hidden. Talk with someone you trust, ask for prayer, and let God's people walk with you. Like the boy with the loaves, bring what you have to Jesus, even if it looks small, and watch what He can do with it.

A Prayer for Provision

Father, You are the Creator of heaven and earth, and everything belongs to You. You see the bills on my table and the worry in my heart. Today I answer Your question: yes, Lord, I trust You. Forgive me for the times I have leaned on my own understanding. Thank You for what You have already placed in my hands. Give me wisdom to manage it well, courage to face my debts, and peace that does not depend on my bank balance. Meet every need according to Your riches in glory in Christ Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.

(Filipenses 4:19, RVR1960)
