The cereal hits the floor. Someone cannot find a shoe. The baby is crying, the teenager will not get off the phone, and you are already late. Before you know it, your voice is louder than you wanted, and the look on your child's face stays with you all day.
If that sounds familiar, take a breath. Every parent loses patience sometimes. The guilt you feel afterward is a sign of how much you love your kids. God is not standing over you with a scorecard. He is the perfect Father, and He wants to help you parent the way He parents you: with compassion, steady love, and a whole lot of patience.
"As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him." (Psalm 103:13, NIV)
In his message "How to Leave a Legacy of Faith Your Kids Will Never Forget" (watch it here), Pastor Rob looked at the royal official in John 4. This man had power and authority, yet his son was dying and there was nothing he could do about it. So he walked about twenty miles from Capernaum to Cana to find Jesus and beg Him to come.
Jesus did not go with him. He simply gave His word.
"'Go,' Jesus replied, 'your son will live.' The man took Jesus at his word and departed." (John 4:50, NIV)
On the way home, the father learned his boy had recovered at the exact hour Jesus spoke. Then Scripture adds this beautiful line: "So he and his whole household believed." (John 4:53, NIV) Pastor Rob reminded us that our children are always watching. The money we leave them may be forgotten, but they will remember watching God answer our prayers.
Patience in parenting grows from that same kind of faith. Most of us want to fix everything right now: the attitude, the grades, the habits. Some things we simply cannot fix. When we bring those things to Jesus and trust Him before we see the answer, our kids see a parent who is calm because God is in control.
As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 1, The Scriptures Inspired, teaches that "the Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are verbally inspired of God and are the revelation of God to man, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct."
That means the Bible is not just good advice for parents. It is God's own trustworthy guide for how we live and how we raise our children. Paul reminded young Timothy "how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." (2 Timothy 3:15, NIV) Someone took the time to plant God's Word in Timothy when he was small. You get to do that for your children too.
1. Pause and pray before you react. "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4, NIV) When you feel your temper rising, stop, take a slow breath, and pray a short prayer: "Holy Spirit, give me patience right now." Patience is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22 to 23), so you do not have to produce it on your own. And when you do lose your cool, go back and apologize. Kids learn grace by seeing a parent ask for it.
2. Put God's Word into ordinary moments. "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Deuteronomy 6:6 to 7, NIV) Choose one short verse this week and read it at breakfast, in the car, or at bedtime. Keep it simple and keep it warm.
3. Let your kids watch God answer your prayers. Start a family prayer list on the refrigerator. Pray together for one thing each night, and write down the date when God answers. Over time that list becomes a legacy, a record your children can look back on to remember that God is faithful.
Father, thank You for the gift of my children. You know how tired I get and how quickly my patience runs out. Forgive me for the times I have spoken in anger. Thank You for being so patient with me. Holy Spirit, fill me with Your love, peace, and patience, and help me pause before I react. Give me wisdom to teach my children Your Word and to show them what it looks like to trust You. Let my kids see You answer my prayers, and let our whole household believe. In Jesus' name, amen.

(Salmos 103:13, RVR1960)
