The alarm goes off and you already feel behind. You answer emails before your feet hit the floor. You work through lunch, you bring the job home, and when you finally lie down your mind is still at the office. You used to care deeply about your work. Now you mostly feel tired, short with the people you love, and numb on the inside.
That is what burnout feels like. It is not laziness and it is not weakness. It is what happens when we try to carry in our own strength what we were never meant to carry alone. Jesus sees you in that place, and His invitation is simple.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, NIV)
This past Sunday, in his message "The Faithful God" (watch it here), Pastor Rob preached from Acts 13, Paul's first recorded sermon. Paul reminded Israel that God had been with them for forty years in the wilderness:
"For about forty years he endured their conduct in the wilderness." (Acts 13:18, NIV)
Pastor Rob explained that the ancient Greek manuscripts of this verse differ by a single letter. One reading means God endured them. The other means God carried them. Both are true. As he put it, "He puts up with us, but He carries us in the midst of it anyways." Then he asked if we have ever carried a sleeping child up the stairs. It is dead weight, and as a dad of five he knows. That is the picture: a Father carrying His child. Moses said the same thing long ago:
"There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place." (Deuteronomy 1:31, NIV)
Pastor Rob also shared a season when he was a young husband and seminary student in Springfield, Missouri, working a cleaning company with Lisa and stretching every dollar to make rent. When he went to pay one Christmas, he was told someone had already paid it. He had been struggling to pay a bill that was already covered. So many of us live and work that way. We push and strive as if everything depends on us. Pastor Rob said it plainly: "You don't have to save yourself. Jesus Christ already paid at the cross."
As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 7, The Baptism in the Holy Spirit, teaches that every believer should seek "the promise of the Father," and that with it comes "the enduement of power for life and service."
Power for life includes your Monday morning, your long shift, and your hardest meeting. Jesus told His followers, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you" (Acts 1:8, NIV). The Holy Spirit does not ask you to run on fumes. He fills you so you can work from His strength instead of your own. "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit," says the LORD Almighty (Zechariah 4:6, NIV).
1. Take a real rest. When the disciples were worn out, Jesus said, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest" (Mark 6:31, NIV). Choose one evening this week to put the phone away, close the laptop, and simply be with God and your family. "In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat, for he grants sleep to those he loves." (Psalm 127:2, NIV)
2. Ask for the Spirit's power before you start. "How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13, NIV) Before you open your first email tomorrow, pause and pray: "Holy Spirit, fill me. I need Your strength for today." Do it again at lunch.
3. Work for an audience of One. "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." (Colossians 3:23, NIV) Burnout often grows from trying to earn approval. Write that verse on a card and keep it at your desk. Then tell one trusted friend how tired you really are and ask them to pray for you.
Father, I am tired. I have been carrying so much in my own strength, and I am running on empty. Thank You that You are a faithful God who carries me like a father carries his child. Jesus, I come to You, and I receive Your rest. Holy Spirit, fill me again with Your power for life and service. Help me to work with all my heart for You, and to rest without guilt. Renew my strength, restore my joy, and give me peace at home and at work. In Jesus' name, amen.
Come rest with us. Bring your questions, your burdens, and your whole family to New Walk Church, 3121 Park Avenue, South Plainfield NJ.

Jesús, vengo a Ti y recibo Tu descanso.
Trae tus preguntas, tus cargas y a toda tu familia a New Walk Church, 3121 Park Avenue, South Plainfield NJ.
