When the Fuse Is Short

It can happen so fast. Someone cuts you off in traffic. Your teenager rolls their eyes. Your spouse says the one thing that always gets under your skin. Before you know it, your voice is louder, your words are sharper, and you have said something you can't take back.

Later the anger cools, and what is left is regret. You look at the people you love most and wonder why they so often get the worst of you. If that sounds familiar, you are not beyond hope. God sees the fire inside you, and He knows how to bring it under His control.

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires." (James 1:19,20, NIV)

Anger Itself Is Not the Enemy

The Bible does not tell us we will never feel angry. It says, "In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold" (Ephesians 4:26,27, NIV). Anger is a signal. Sometimes it tells us something really is wrong. The danger is what we do next.

Unchecked anger gives the enemy a foothold in our homes, our marriages, and our friendships. A small space becomes a stronghold. That is why God wants to deal with it now, before it grows.

A Small Spark, a Big Fire

In a message on James 3, "James 3 | The Hazardous Tongue" (watch it here), Pastor Rob preached on the hazards of the tongue. James puts it plainly: "the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark" (James 3:5, NIV).

Angry words are often that spark. One sentence in a heated moment can burn for years in a child's heart or a marriage. James says, "Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be" (James 3:10, NIV). The good news is that God does not only ask us to change. He gives us the power to change.

What We Believe

As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 9, Sanctification, teaches that "sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God." It also says, "By the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to obey the command: 'Be ye holy, for I am holy.'"

That means you don't have to white knuckle your way to a calmer life. As you yield to the Holy Spirit, He grows His fruit in you: "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control" (Galatians 5:22,23, NIV). And He is patient with you in the process, because "the LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love" (Psalm 103:8, NIV).

3 Practical Steps for This Week

1. Pause before you speak. When you feel the heat rising, stop. Take a slow breath, step away for a few minutes if you need to, and pray a short prayer like David did: "Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips" (Psalm 141:3, NIV). Remember, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1, NIV).

2. Make it right before the sun goes down. If your words hurt someone today, go back and say, "I was wrong. Will you forgive me?" Don't explain it away. "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32, NIV).

3. Look under the anger. Anger often sits on top of something deeper, like hurt, fear, stress, or exhaustion. Ask God to show you what is really going on, and talk with a pastor or a trusted friend about it. If your anger has ever turned into hurting someone, or if anyone in your home is not safe, please reach out for help today. That is a brave and godly step.

A Prayer for Peace Inside

Lord, You know how quickly anger rises in me. I am sorry for the words I have spoken and the people I have hurt. Thank You that You are slow to anger and rich in love toward me. Holy Spirit, fill me again. Grow Your patience, gentleness, and self control in my heart. Set a guard over my mouth, and help me make things right with the people I love. If I have never given my life to You, I do that now. I turn from my sin, I believe Jesus died for me and rose again, and I receive Him as my Savior and Lord. Make me new. In Jesus' name, amen.

Si tus palabras hirieron a alguien hoy, regresa y dile: "Me equivoqué. ¿Me perdonas?"

Hazme nuevo. En el nombre de Jesús, amén.
