The Wound That Keeps Replaying

Some hurts do not stay in the past. A parent who was never there. A spouse who broke a promise. A friend who shared what you told them in confidence. The moment ended years ago, but you replay it at night, rehearse what you should have said, and feel your chest tighten when their name comes up.

If that is you, you are not alone, and God is not asking you to pretend it did not hurt. Jesus knows what it is to be betrayed, mocked, and abandoned by the people closest to Him. He also knows the way out.

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." (Psalm 147:3, NIV)

What Forgiveness Is and Is Not

Forgiveness is not saying what happened was okay. It is not forgetting, and it does not always mean trusting that person again right away. If someone is unsafe, forgiving them does not mean staying in harm's way. Forgiveness is choosing to release the debt. You hand the case over to God and stop carrying the weight of making them pay.

That is why Scripture says, "Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord" (Romans 12:19, NIV). Letting go is not weakness. It is trusting a just God to do what only He can do.

Bitterness, on the other hand, never stays small. "See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many" (Hebrews 12:15, NIV). Unforgiveness promises to protect you, but it slowly takes over your peace, your sleep, your home, and your walk with God.

It Is About You

In the New Walk message "Grace for My Enemies: It's Not About Them, It's About You" (watch it here), we got real about Jesus' command to show grace to the people who hurt us. The message walks through how to put forgiveness into practice, break free from bitterness, and grow a stronger faith no matter how tough the situation. The title says it well. Forgiveness may never change the other person, but it will change you.

Jesus said, "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44, NIV). And He lived it. On the cross, with nails in His hands, He prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34, NIV).

What We Believe

As an Assemblies of God church, New Walk holds to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Fundamental Truth 5, The Salvation of Man, declares that "man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God." Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ.

Here is why that matters for forgiveness. Every one of us needed mercy we did not deserve. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8, NIV). People who have been forgiven much are given the strength to forgive. "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32, NIV).

3 Practical Steps for This Week

1. Name the hurt honestly before God. Write down what happened and how it affected you. You cannot release what you refuse to admit. Then pray over that page and tell the Lord, "I am choosing to forgive." Feelings often come later than the decision.

2. Pray for the person who hurt you. Start small. Ask God to bless them and to work in their life. When Peter asked how many times he should forgive, "Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times'" (Matthew 18:22, NIV). Each time the memory returns, forgive again.

3. Overcome evil with good. "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21, NIV). Ask God for one wise, safe act of kindness, a kind word, or a simple refusal to speak badly about them. If the hurt is deep, invite a pastor or trusted believer to walk with you and pray with you.

A Prayer to Forgive

Father, You know what was done to me and how much it hurt. Thank You that through the blood of Jesus You forgave me when I did not deserve it. Today I choose to forgive the person who hurt me. I release the debt and I place them in Your hands. Pull out every root of bitterness in my heart and heal my wounds. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and teach me to love the way You love. If I have never given my life to You, I do that now. I turn from my sin, I believe Jesus died for me and rose again, and I receive Him as my Savior and Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.

Cómo perdonar a quien te hirió

2. Ora por la persona que te hirió. Empieza poco a poco.
